How to Master Handstands

PROGRESSIVE TECHNIQUES TO BUILD STRENGTH

Handstands are a beautiful and challenging aspect of yoga. They require strength, balance, and confidence. For yoga enthusiasts, fitness buffs, and aspiring yoga teachers, mastering handstands can be a rewarding journey. This blog will guide you through progressive techniques to build the necessary strength and confidence for handstands.

Understanding the Basics of Handstands

Before diving into the techniques, it is essential to understand the basics of handstands. A handstand involves balancing your entire body weight on your hands. This pose engages various muscle groups, including the shoulders, arms, core, and legs. Mastering handstands can enhance your overall body awareness and strength.

Building Foundational Strength

The first step in mastering handstands is building foundational strength. This involves strengthening the shoulders, arms, and core. Here are some exercises to get you started:

Shoulder Strengthening Exercises

  1. Shoulder Taps: Begin in a plank position. Lift one hand to tap the opposite shoulder. Alternate sides. Perform three sets of 10-15 repetitions.
  2. Pike Push-Ups: Start in a downward dog position. Lower your head towards the ground by bending your elbows. Push back up to the starting position. Do three sets of 8-12 repetitions.

Arm Strengthening Exercises

  1. Push-Ups: Classic push-ups are excellent for building arm strength. Aim for three sets of 10-15 repetitions.
  2. Tricep Dips: Use a chair or bench. Lower and lift your body by bending and straightening your elbows. Perform three sets of 10-15 repetitions.

Core Strengthening Exercises

  1. Plank Holds: Hold a plank position for as long as possible. Start with 30 seconds and gradually increase the duration.
  2. Leg Raises: Lie on your back with your legs straight. Lift your legs towards the ceiling, then lower them without touching the ground. Do three sets of 10-15 repetitions.

Wall-Assisted Handstands

Start by practicing handstands against a wall. This provides support and helps you get used to the feeling of being upside down.

  1. Wall Walks: Face away from the wall. Walk your feet up the wall while walking your hands closer to the wall. Hold the position for 15-30 seconds. Perform three sets.
  2. Wall Kick-Ups: Face the wall. Kick one leg up, followed by the other, until both feet touch the wall. Hold for 15-30 seconds. Repeat for three sets.

Free-Standing Handstand Practice

Once comfortable with wall-assisted handstands, transition to free-standing practice.

  1. L-Shaped Handstands: From a downward dog position, lift one leg up and stack your hips over your shoulders. Practice balancing with one leg up. Switch sides. Hold for 15-30 seconds on each side. Perform three sets.
  2. Partner-Assisted Handstands: Have a partner hold your legs while you balance on your hands. This helps build confidence and stability.

Progressive Techniques and Tips for Handstands

Breathing and mindfulness play a crucial role in mastering handstands. Controlled breathing helps maintain focus and calmness. Practice deep, diaphragmatic breathing during your handstand practice. Focus on slow, steady breaths to keep your mind and body relaxed.

Overcome Fear and Build Confidence

Fear is a common barrier to mastering handstands. Overcoming this fear requires practice and patience. Start with baby steps and gradually progress to more challenging variations. Celebrate small victories along the way. Visualization techniques can also help. Visualize yourself successfully holding a handstand. This mental practice can boost your confidence.

Consistency and Patience

Consistency and patience are key to mastering handstands. Practice regularly, but listen to your body. Avoid overexertion and take rest days when needed. Progress might be slow, but perseverance will pay off. Here’s a backbend to headstand sequence from one of Vikasa’s master yogis.

Start Slow and Steady

While focusing on handstands, exploring headstands can be beneficial too. Headstands, or Sirsasana, are foundational inversions in yoga. Here is a simple guide on how to do a headstand:

  1. Start in a Kneeling Position: Sit on your knees. Interlace your fingers and place your forearms on the ground, creating a tripod with your hands and head.

  2. Place the Crown of Your Head on the Ground: Rest the crown of your head between your interlaced fingers.

  3. Lift Your Hips: Straighten your legs and walk your feet closer to your head, lifting your hips.

  4. Tuck Your Knees: Tuck your knees into your chest, balancing on your forearms and head.

  5. Straighten Your Legs: Slowly extend your legs towards the ceiling, finding your balance. Hold for as long as comfortable.
