Creating goals and setting intentions is a common practice when January 1st rolls around each year. At Vikasa we believe that setting goals and intentions is a powerful practice to maintain all year round. Essentially, these are what help us to continuously expand and evolve. In the wellness world, setting intentions can often be short lived. It’s very common to set huge goals at new year and then by February, these goals have fallen to the wayside, leaving us feeling demotivated and defeated. 

Setting intentions can be incredibly motivating and empowering. Yet, reaching goals takes dedication, determination and commitment. We also need to continuously reassess our goals so if we need to course correct at any time, we can easily do this.

Why Set Intentions?

  • Clarity and Focus: In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Setting intentions provides clarity, helping you align your actions with your values and desires.
  • Empowerment: By consciously choosing your intentions, you feel more in control of your life. You become an active participant rather than a mere bystander.
  • Enhanced Wellbeing: Numerous studies highlight the positive effects of mindfulness practices, like intention setting, on mental and physical health. It reduces stress, fosters a positive outlook, and promotes overall wellbeing.
 

When is a Good Time to Set Intentions?

The new year is a great time to set intentions, however, you don’t need to wait until January first! Here are a few others times that we love setting intentions:

At the start of a yoga class: Before diving into your practice, take a moment to set an intention. Whether it’s finding inner peace, cultivating strength, or practicing gratitude, this intention will help guide your practice and imbue more meaning into the experience.

Each morning: Kickstart your mornings by setting an intention for the day ahead. It could be as simple as “I choose joy” or as specific as “I will communicate my needs clearly.”

New moon: Many people find the new moon phase conducive for setting intentions for the upcoming lunar cycle. It’s a time of introspection and new beginnings and a chance to check in every month to keep on track with your goals and direction.

Don’t ‘set and forget!’

While setting intentions is inspiring, it is most powerful when coupled with commitment and dedication. Merely stating an intention won’t always be enough; you must actively work towards realizing it. For instance, if your intention is to cultivate self-love, dedicate time daily for self-care rituals, practice positive affirmations, and surround yourself with uplifting influences. If your intention is to have less stress in your life, take the time to identify your key stressors and identify practices that you know help you to lower stress, then when you feel your stress levels rising, you have ways to support yourself. 

Intention setting is something that we often encourage people to do when they come to Vikasa- whether joining us for a Vikation, a Signature Retreat, a Personal Program or a Yoga Teacher Training. Setting an intention helps guests and students to connect with what they want to gain from the experience and in turn, shapes their journey. It also helps us as teachers and educators to support our guests to reach these goals and leave feeling accomplished and inspired to continue on their path beyond their time at Vikasa.
